3 Pre-Workout Tips

Have you found yourself feeling exhausted or dehydrated after a moderate workout? Knowing when to eat and what to eat before or during a workout can help you stay energized and ready to go.

Heavy, sugary foods and too many carbs, or the wrong carbs, can leave you feeling sluggish pre-workout. Sound familiar? It’s one thing to eat a yogurt before a workout, but it’s another to eat a bowl of fettucini alfredo like Michael Scott from The Office before a run.

Follow these food tips for your next workout to make it your best one yet.

Eat A Healthy, Well-Balanced Breakfast

It can be tempting to skip breakfast or grab a bagel in the morning to save time and effort, but starting the day off right with a healthy and well-balanced breakfast can help fuel your morning workout.

What should you eat before a morning workout? In addition to a healthy protein, focus on carbohydrate-based foods or drinks, like low-fat milk, bananas, yogurt, or whole-grain cereals. Be mindful of eating new foods or drinks before a workout because you can upset your stomach if your body is not used to it and make sure to give yourself ample time to digest before you lace up your running shoes.

Don’t Skip Snacks

Does a growling stomach sometimes distract you during your run or gym routine? There’s nothing wrong with eating a small snack before or during a workout to keep yourself fueled for the trek.

Just like breakfast, having carbohydrate-rich food or drink during a workout can keep you going and encourages faster post-workout recovery. Consider snacks like protein shakes, low-fat granola, peanut butter sandwich, Summit Biltong or a sports drink.

Don’t Forget To Hydrate

The importance of staying hydrated during and after exercise cannot be understated. As a simple rule, drink 2-3 cups of water 2-3 hours before your workout and about 1 cup every 20 minutes of your workout.

But sometimes we need more hydration that exceeds the standard, like on hot or humid days. Increase your water intake during the summer months to keep yourself cool and hydrated. If you’re not sweating during a workout, you’re dehydrated!

As a supplement to water, sports drinks, like Gatorade and Powerade, can help maintain your body’s electrolytes and give you energy after strenuous exercise.
